Creative Non-Fiction

by Glen Thomas Southergill (2008-10-03)

Nine long months have passed and my home remains for sale. The copper plumbing, like yours, was stolen about four months ago. The kind police officer who took the report and insurance agent who inspected the damage all said the same thing. Do not replace until close to closing. Whoever did the damage can (and may) return!

As I watch the bank balance deplete every month to pay the mortgage, I get increasingly frantic. I contemplate ways to get potential buyer attention. My fiance argues our realtor should be fired (although I remain unconvinced that a new realtor is the needed solution). The thoughts turn to perhaps renting it (and hoping my tenent does no damage and pays the bills).

Your piece effectively captures the progressive emotional deterioration associated with a prolonged financial challenge. Anxiety morphs into frustration. Frustration yields to desperation. Selling for scrap is not a bad idea suddenly!

I fear I will be of no use regarding a possible genre classification for your work. However, it is a very effective and enjoyable work of creative non-fiction.

To Complicate things further . . .

Some might take that CNF label one step further and call it "Imaginary Nonfiction."
